Frequently Asked Questions

1. What rivers do you guide?

We fish most all productive Western Washington rivers. Some of our favorites include the Skykomish, Stillaguamish, Snohomish, Sauk, Satsop, Wynoochee, Hoh, Humptulips.

2. Haven't I seen Jim somewhere before?

You may well have. If you have spent any time on the river, you've probably seen Jim taking clients on a trip of a lifetime. In addition, Action Guide Service has been featured in articles in Salmon, Trout, Steelheader and Washington Oregon Game and Fish magazines. Jim has also guided two episodes for Fisherman's Heaven, a Seattle-based Fishing Show debuting in 1999.

3. What type of tackle do you use?

Basically for steelhead, we will either drift eggs, shrimp, etc., or we will pull plugs or bait divers. For Salmon we will most often backbounce eggs or large baited plugs. For sturgeon, we still-fish with shrimp. We have many techniques for each species and will use whatever the conditions dictate.

4. What if I want to keep a fish?

Except when we are fishing a "catch and release" season, the decision of whether or not to keep a fish is entirely up to the client. If you decide to keep a fish, Big Jim will clean it for you at the end of the day.

5. What if I want to take a picture and then release the fish?

Jim will be glad to assist you in getting "proof" of your catch as he always brings his camera with him. His only requirement is that he gets to keep a copy of the photo as well. If you are inexperienced, Jim will show you the proper way to hold the fish and get you all "picture ready." Then he'll get you situated for reviving the fish and giving it a good release.

6. Do your female or children guests normally catch the most fish?

Women and children often do well because in all honesty, they pay the most attention to what their guide tells them, they listen carefully and they rarely take their eyes off the rod!

7. What if I have never fished before?

We cater to both the novice, and experienced angler, and will make every effort to make your first outing a very enjoyable experience. You don't have to know any fishing knots or even how to tie on a lure or bait. We'll provide as much assistance as you desire.

8. What are the best months to fish for salmon and steelhead?

While steelhead can be taken nearly year around, March and April are the most productive months. The same can be said for Salmon, but without question, October and November are the best two months. These months get booked well in advance, so plan as far ahead as possible!
